The COMPASS is used by many two-year colleges to determine the placement level of students in Math, English, and Reading as established by the Arkansas State Board of Higher Education. The Freshman Assessment and Placement (PDF) document identifies the scores needed on the exams to bypass developmental courses at BRTC. The test will last approximately two (2) hours. The results of these tests will be used to place students into the proper level of Reading, Math, and English.
The COMPASS test cost is $20.00, regardless of how many parts of the test are taken. All or part of the test maybe retaken to improve scores. BRTC will accept the highest score from each area. It is recommended that students complete free sessions in PLATO or in Adult Education before retesting.
Scheduled COMPASS tests dates can be found on the BRTC calendar.
A calculator may be used for the Algebra sections of the test, but not on the numerical math test. A calculator is available on screen, but you may bring your own. You are not allowed to use the following types of calculators: pocket organizers, hand held or laptop computers, electronic writing pads or pen-input devices, or models with QWERTY (typewriter style) keyboard. Specifically the following models are prohibited: Casio Algebra FX 2.0 and CFX 9970G, Texas Instruments TI 89 and TI92, HP 48GII and 40G and 49G.
